Trauma Therapy

Most people will experience trauma in their lifetime whether it’s a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden death of a loved one, a violent criminal act, exposure to the violence of war, or a natural disaster.

While some may naturally recover from trauma, others may have a more long-lasting impact. This can cause a person to live with deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or posttraumatic stress far after the event has passed.

In these circumstances, the support, guidance, and assistance of a therapist are fundamental to healing from trauma.

How do I know if my child or teen has trauma symptoms?

Children and teens may react to traumas in various ways. Sometimes, they become very quiet and withdrawn. They may seem afraid or anxious a lot of the time, and they may no longer want to do the things they used to enjoy. Other times, they may seem very angry, ready to fight, and react to minor problems with very big emotions. There are often problems with sleep, including bad dreams or nightmares. School work often suffers, and the family system feels stressed.

Adult trauma symptoms

When a trauma occurs, sometimes adults feel as though they keep re-living it. They may have disturbing dreams, feel as if they move through the day in a fog, or feel anxious in situations that never bothered them before. Adults may have some of the same symptoms as children such as being withdrawn, quick to anger, or feeling uneasy leaving their homes. Often, they have thoughts like "I'll never be safe again," or "There's something wrong with me." It might feel hard to do ordinary things, such as go to the grocery store or go out with friends.
